Those are the words of Stevie Wonder in a song he wrote in 1976, the opening track from his Songs “In The Key of Life LP”. How prolific and how appropriate these words and the thoughts they convey juxtaposed against the world we live in today. War, unrest, and uneasiness in eastern Europe, Israel, and Gaza, and even America’s southern border. Saber-rattling and political discourse that fuels fear, distrust, and combativeness. Stable institutions bending to bullies, our very environment threatened, and I could go on.

Steveland Morris had it right when he said he was sharing the serious news that this could be disastrous and change all our joy and laughter to tears and pain. That if evil possesses us, we will all be destroyed.

So, what are we missing, sorely missing? L O V E!!!

Love for our fellow man and love for people we may not see eye to eye as it relates to politics, religion, customs, business, and even the economy. Love for the planet that gives and sustains life. Love for God, the power that created us. But the unrest and the kind of hate that’s going around, even inside of America, with people who are affiliated with one political party versus the other, who threaten violence if they don’t receive the outcome that they want. 

Yes, Stevie was right. Love is what the world needs today because only love will seed the kind of tolerance that we need to have a good relationship with each other through this hateful period. Only love will help us to understand that while we don’t have to agree with each other’s philosophy, we are all one people, human beings on one planet, under one sun. If not, if we continue down this path, if we don’t work together, we absolutely will perish.
