This week I came across another round of ads promising small business owners “quick approval, no credit check” loans — money in your account in 24 hours, no paperwork headaches, no hard questions asked.
I want to say this plainly, as someone who has spent decades on both sides of that desk: if a lender isn’t asking you hard questions, that should be the hardest question of all.
At the Birmingham Business Resource Center, we ask for financial statements, cash flow projections, tax returns, sometimes a business plan you’d rather not have to write. I understand why that feels like a burden when somebody else is offering you money with none of it. But that paperwork isn’t there to slow you down or stand in your way — it’s there because a responsible lender is trying to find out one thing: can your business actually carry this debt and come out stronger on the other side?
When a lender skips that step, they aren’t doing you a favor. They’re usually doing one of two things — charging you a rate so steep it covers their risk regardless of whether you succeed, or setting repayment terms so aggressive that the loan becomes the thing that sinks the business it was supposed to save. I saw this pattern for years at Citizens Federal under Dr. Gaston, and I’m seeing the next generation of it now, just with a slicker website and a faster app.
Here’s my advice to any business owner reading this: if an offer sounds easier than what an established lender, a CDFI, or a center like ours is asking of you, don’t take that as a sign you found a shortcut. Take it as a sign you need to read the fine print twice — the interest rate, the repayment schedule, and what happens the first time you’re late. The institutions asking the most of you up front are very often the ones most invested in your long-term success.
